Neeraja Kona to launch a clothing label, Kaluva

Neeraja Kona
Neeraja Kona

After movies and restaurants, the stylist ventures into the retail sector

She hobnobs with the top brass in the southern film industries, styling them for their film projects, endorsements and public appearances, and her social media feeds provide pointers to fashion and beauty trends. In the course of styling for her projects, Neeraja Kona found herself developing a deep liking for breathable fabrics in comfortable silhouettes. She might wear designer labels now and then but most often, she says she’s at ease wearing handloom cotton kurtas. “A store like Fabindia would be my go-to place for workwear clothes. And, I’m aware that for many women, comfortable clothing is of utmost priority,” she says, talking to us a day after announcing her forthcoming clothing project, Kaluva (lotus), on social media.

She’s been doing the groundwork for a year. Her fascination for block prints took her to Jaipur where she began working with the craftsmen. Pockets of Rajasthan are known for their intricate block print designs, from the Anokhi museum in the vicinity of Amer Fort to the bylanes of Jaipur where one would find several block printers busy at work. Kaluva will have a range of cottons and muls block printed in Jaipur. Certain colours have become synonymous with block prints. Neeraja wants to present a broader colour palette, “Apart from the vegetable dyes, indigos and reds one associates with the bagru prints, we will have a variety of pastels; the plan is to use natural dyes and a mix of chemical colours to arrive at new shades. It would be good to have colours like mauve.”

Kaluva will launch in a couple of months, first as an online store and eventually as a brick and mortar space. The USP, says Neeraja, will be the affordable pricing, “I might be working with designers for film projects but this clothing line is not going to be ‘a designer range’ so to speak.”

The workshop for Kaluva will be in Neeraja’s hometown Bapatla, where she will be roping in homemakers and single women looking to better their livelihoods. “Block printing will be done in Jaipur, the master tailors in Hyderabad will be working on silhouettes and the stitching will happen in Bapatla,” she informs.

In recent years, several start-ups have entered the handloom clothing space with online stores. Ask Neeraja what will set Kaluva apart and she laughs, “It’s okay if Kaluva doesn’t really stand out from the crowd or offers a few silhouettes one might find in the retail sector. I want women to relate to the brand and be happy wearing the clothes. A few stores in Hyderabad specialise in easy, comfortable cotton clothing. But the rest of the stuff available is generic in terms of colours and patterns.”

There’s always scope for a new clothing line and coming from someone who has worked closely with the fashion industry, Kaluva could be worth the wait.

Wins silver at the South Asian Championship

Archers of city-based Volga Archery Academy are in a buoyant mood as its archer K. Venkatadri, a Class X student of St Johns’ (E.M.) High School (Gunadala) had returned from Dhaka with three silver medals thus enhancing the pride of the country and the city in the 3rd South Asian archery championship that concluded Wednesday night.

The teenager, who was part of the Indian senior team, figured in three finals – individual Olympic round, mixed, and team championships and finished second in all three events. “He went down to fellow-Indian Harsha Prasher 141-144 in the individual Olympic round final and in the mixed event, partnering Isha Pawar, he lost to Bangladesh pair 148-153. In the closely-fought team championship, Venkatadri along with Harsha Prasher, Mayank Rawat bowed out to Bangladesh trio in a narrow margin of 125-126,” said Andhra Pradesh Archery Association secretary Cherukuri Satyanarayana.

“This is his second international achievement after the silver medal exploits at Singapore in Asian Youth archery championship in 2014. Presently he is among the top eight junior archers in the country,” he added.

Fourteen-year-old Venkakadri made it to the Indian senior team after he won the gold medal in the Khelo India competitions held recently at Delhi where he defeated Harsha Prasher in the final.

Mr. Satyanarayana said that Venkatadri had all the wherewithal to emerge as a top archer as he had loads of patience and willingness to go the extra mile.

“He is a coach’s delight as he follows the instructions diligently. We, at Volga Archery Academy, are giving all the necessary equipment and other financial support to him,” he said.

Next challenge

The next big challenge to the teenager is at Pune where he will be taking part in the Senior Nationals as part of the Andhra Pradesh senior compound team.

“Venkatadri needs to attend an exposure trip to the U.S.A where he can learn latest tips from the renowned and experienced coaches. In fact former Mexico national coach and California -based archery coach Natty Jamie is willing to come to Vijayawada to train the young archers,” Mr Satyanarayana said.

On behalf of St. John’s Educational Institutions, correspondent T. Suman Thyagaraj gave ₹50,000 for the purchase of archery ancillaries equipments besides cancelling his school tuition fee completely. School President T. Monica Suman and Principal P. Rama Bharathi hailed his stupendous show and wished him more glory in his future contests.

Farm Radio is the new go-to helpline for Vizag’s farmers

Visakhapatnam :

A ‘Farm Radio’ that was launched to give insights and tips to farmers has met with enormous success in the district.
Developed by scientists of Anakapalle Regional Agriculture Station (ARAS), the Farm Radio app sees hundreds of farmers tuning into it everyday through their smartphones.

The success of the app has prompted ARAS to try to get All India Radio’s Vizag and Vijayawada stations broadcast Farm Radio in order to reach out to a larger audience.

ARAS officials said they have are extending support to farmers in the form of information through toll-free numbers as well as a special app. “Farm Radio offers tips on maintaining crops, weather forecast, market information and related tips as well as success stories of various farmers,” said an ARAS official.

“Farm Radio is nothing but an internet radio. Any farmer who has a smartphone and internet connectivity can easily access Farm Radio. The response from farmers is great and they are asking us for more information on methods to protect their crops,” senior scientist of crop production K Tejeswara Rao told TOI.

“This radio is different from other FM radios as this radio has no boundaries because it is connected to the internet. Farmers can listen to the radio round-the-clock and can also choose whatever topic they want to listen to. We are planning to add more topics and other aspects,” Rao said.

After witnessing the response, ARAS is now trying to sign an MoU with All India Radio, because they have more topics as they have already been transmitting ‘Palle Seemalu and Grama Darsini’ programmes. They have more than 160 topics and ARAS wishes to upload all these topics to provide the information to farmers through Farm Radio.

Rao said farmers are seeking information according to the season. Nowadays, they are asking about mango and cashew orchids, besides sugarcane plantation. Anyone can access the radio by logging into www.farmradio.in . This radio was developed by a group of scientists of ARAS – Pradeep Kumar, Dr Moshe, Dr Chittibabu, Dr Vijayabhinandana, Dr Dhanasri and others.
