The graduating class of Sarojini Naidu School of Arts showcased the best from their body of work from their years in the University. The Flight — Up Up and Away was a coming together of students practising different forms of art and therefore it was a multimedia delight with students presenting works in varied media to video installations. Most importantly, the subjects of expressions were personal thoughts and social observations.
The show started even before you entered the auditorium with Diptej’s video installations — Sinking Titanic and Lost in Time. The student, who hails from Goa, explains, “The Sinking Titanic depicts the kind of situation where we are stuck in between, like pendulums. In Goa, because of a sudden change in politics, cargo ships were affected. I connected that with the Titanic.” Diptej’s other installation Lost in Time projects visuals on an easy chair, while features are in motion in the backdrop, to signify “the frustration of losing things in cultures that we once valued”
Inside, the floor was used by rather riveting installations, including a strong expression using the media of wooden crates and plaster of Paris brains. Among the other brilliant works were Barun Mandal’s tea wash and benzene print, Dhiraj Pednekar’s video installation on graffitti that grew out of his love for observing architecture, Faiza Hasan Uzzal’s expressions questioning concepts created by society that women have to abide by and Radhika Ramamurthy’s work with termite wings.
Monika Bijlani worked on a public art project. Build Unbuild is an inquiry into how people would react to everyday things. “I invite the visitor to build something out of these cement blocks. These objects that we all come across everyday have begun to have a different effect on me as an artist and I want to see how others respond to it,” she says, adding that she will also be documenting the project to study how people react to or choose not to react to the ordinary and mundane.

The students will cover nearly 5,000 polling booths in Telangana and Seemandhra region during the general elections
As many as 3,000 students of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) have been roped in for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls due on April 30 and May 7, in Telangana and Seemandhra region respectively.
The students will be at the polling booths to webcast or live stream the poll proceedings in various districts. Students deputed to Telangana districts moved for poll duty on April 29.
Students of the Nuzvid International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) have been webcasting the election proceedings in sensitive polling stations for the last few years. They were roped in for the by-elections and the panchayat polls last year.
Speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday, Nuzvid IIIT Director Ibrahim Khan said that Collectors of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari, Nalgonda and Khammam districts had sent requisitions asking to depute students for webcasting of the general elections. “Election officers of other districts too asked to send our students webcasting, but we will depute the students as per the availability of strength,” he said, adding that the students would cover nearly 5,000 booths in Telangana and Seemandhra region.
“We are deputing students to Khammam, Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari districts. This will certainly be a good experience for them,” said Prof. Khan.
Strict vigil
“In addition to the IIIT students, we asked some private universities and institutions to depute their students for webcasting so that the poll officials can observe the election proceedings from the district collectorates and State Election Commission in Hyderabad live,” said the election officers.
“I took part in the webcasting for panchayat elections last year. It is a good system to keep a close watch on trouble mongers, arrest rigging and conduct elections peacefully,” said a third year engineering student P. Sharat.

Happiness is trending in Hyderabad this poll season with a photo exhibition and candid Happy Hyderabad videos
Hyderabad is on a happy high this poll season. Unmindful of the power cuts, youngsters taking a cue from Pharel Williams’ Happy project have released candid Happy videos online. Adding to the happy flavour is a photography exhibition showcasing colours of happiness through its photographs.
When American singer Pharel Williams in his trademark funky hat sang:
Clap along if you feel likea room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clapalong if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do…, denizens across the globe are creating their own spinoffs and posting it online.
Narrating a story
Thariq Hussain and Shreyans Dungarwals’ Happy Hyderabad song narrates a small story. “I didn’t want people to just pose in the video. I wanted to tell a story through it,” says Shreyans. Engineering students Melvin Sam, Karthik Malladi, Boga Sunil, Ritesha A Jairaj, Kausar Tabassum, Kushal and Mohith Paul of Couch Potato Productions’ Happy Hyderabad video is also part of the league. Melvin’s passion for filmmaking came handy when the group decided ‘Hyderabad deserved to have an awesome version of the song’.
With a couple of short films and music videos in their repertoire, their happy number shows enthusiastic people dancing merrily at different popular spots in the city. From Charminar and Golconda to Mecca Masjid and Hitech city…. the video showcases the blend of tradition and modernity in Hyderabad. Karthik recalls the Metro shoot at Uppal.
“The workers had finished work and were returning home. They were tired but when we told them about our concept, they were too eager to be part of it.” If SVM and Half Full Creatives’ A Gift to Hyderabad Inspired by Pharel Williams Happy shows candid dancing on the streets, another ‘Hyderabad is Happy’ album has been shot with Nexus 5 phone.
If the online world shines bright with these ‘happy’ sparklers, ‘Magnifying Happiness Photography’ a photo exhibition by Gifting Happiness at Muse Art Gallery celebrates happiness. The company which believes in ‘magnifying happiness through gifting’ helps individuals plan something special for their loved one.
“With the amount of pressures in modern day, it takes time to be happy. We take our loved ones for granted especially when it comes to buying gifts for them. We just buy a gift without much thought,” says Revathi Turaga of Gifting Happiness. The pictures in the gallery are accompanied by a ‘wall of wishes’. The exhibition depicts the journey the company has undertaken in making their customers’ lives happy by customising and innovating their gifts.

Medak-based DDS, with 10 African nations, strives for Afro-Indian Millet Alliance
The Deccan Development Society (DDS), which is working on various crop improvement programmes, has succeeded in forging alliance with several African nations for research and development of millet cultivation.
The DDS, headquartered at Pastapur in Medak district, along with 10 African nations, is actively participating for the realisation of the Afro-Indian Millet Alliance which has been under planning stage since February last year.
Food security
“Many West African nations are getting ready to pursue agricultural models designed by the DDS that encapsulate ecological farming, biodiversity, food and nutritional security, along with ecological security.
The Millet Network of India (MINI), of which the DDS is the national convenor, has foregrounded the various cultivation aspects of millets including biodiversity, ecology and farmers’ self-reliance,” said DDS Director P.V. Sateesh.
Overseas alliance
Speaking to the media at Pastapur on Tuesday, Mr. Sateesh said that last week the DDS was invited to attend to the West African Regional Assembly of the COPAGEN, a network present in nine West African countries– Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo, Cote D’Ivore, Mali, Benin, Niger, Guinea, Guinea Bissau–, is engaged with millions of West African farmers.
“We are very happy to see that the research on Bt Cotton pursued by the DDS in Adilabad, Nalgonda and Warangal is being followed to find out the impact of Bt cotton in Burkina Faso, a West African country. Following in the footsteps of the DDS, the farmers there have formed community research groups and are regularly monitoring and colleting data on the cultivation aspects of Bt cotton,” he said.
A DDS team comprising Narsamma, a peasant farmer; Ms. Jayasri Cherukuri, Coordinator of the MINI and P.V. Satheesh, Director of the DDS, made a detailed presentation on the work done by the network here on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the DDS and the COPAGEN are also planning to organise farmer exchange programmes between the Africa and India, with a special focus on the women farmers in both the countries.

Killo Dombu of Anthriguda village in Dumbriguda mandal is proud of his achievements. Almost every plant is productive on his one-acre plot which yields cash crops. The innovative methods of cultivation adopted by him are a big draw today.
He is growing 40 varieties of horticulture plants, using bio-pesticides and adopting totally organic methods of cultivation. The crops being raised by him include vegetables, fruit plantations, forestry species, creeper vegetables, floriculture, tubers, oilseeds and medicinal plants. He has a bio-mass based manure pit in one corner of his plot. He also has cattle which give milk, cow dung and the stuff required for producing organic manure.
Dombu advocates growing multiple crops instead of mono-crop. His plantations include 40 plants each of mango, chiku, acid lime, red sanders, teak, bamboo, fish tail palm, jack, jamun, custard apple, guava and Bahumia. Creeper varieties are pumpkin, beans, bottlegourd and ridgegourd. His plantation is fenced with trees such as euphorbia, agave and jetropha. Vegetables including brinjal, green pepper, chilli, pepper, rajma and cabbage are being grown as inter-crops along with medicinal plants.
P. Viswanatham, chairman of Vikasa, an NGO working to propagate organic farming among tribal farmers, told The Hindu that Dombu had been a source of inspiration to other ‘Maa Thota’ farmers. Dombu says that he is earning Rs.50,000 per year on the crop yield. Besides, the millet crops cultivated in his land take care of daily bread of his family members. A beaming Dombu shares his success story with his co-farmers and asks them to adopt his methods of farming. His wife, daughter and son-in-law together work in his ‘Maa Thota’ supported by NABARD. Not many visitors understand what he tries to communicate in chaste Odisha but the smile on his face and his green garden speak volumes for his achievement.

Sridharani, a 7 class student of the AP Paper Mills Model High School, has passed ‘Praveena Uttarardh’ examination with distinction
At 11, she has passed the Hindi examination ‘Praveena Uttarardh’ conducted by the Dakshina Bharata Hindi Prachara Sabha with distinction, creating a record in the coastal Andhra region.
Apart from being a bright student, Sridharani, a 7 class student of the AP Paper Mills Model High School, is also active in extra-curricular activities. She nurtures the ambition to become a teacher some day.
The young girl appeared for the Pradhamika examination at the age of eight and within three years, she became the youngest student to complete the Praveen Uttaradh by scoring 72 per cent, the highest among the group in Rajahmundry. Before achieving this feat, she has crossed eight other levels which included Pradhamika, Madhyama, Rashtra, Praveshika, Vishardha Puruvardh, Vishardha Uttarardh and Praveena Uttaradh.
Over two decades ago, sending children to learn typewriting and Hindi coaching classes was very common in this locality. Hindi classes conducted by the Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachara Sabha were a big hit in summer vacations. But with the advent of technology, computer coaching took precedence pushing to the background the other two activities.
Sridharani comes from an economically poor family and her father is bed-ridden. Her mother works as a domestic maid to make both ends meet while the little girl tries to help her mother in domestic chores whenever the time permits.
“I am eager to write the Pandit exam but my Hindi teacher told me that I’ll have to wait until I complete 18 years. I was told that a student of my age completed medicine in one of the States in our country, then why can’t I appear for the Pandit exam now?,” Sridharani wonders.
“It is for the Dakshin Bharata Hindi Prachara Sabha, the State government and academicians to take a stand and guide Sridharani accordingly,” says Seema Nallani, General Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, International Paper, which owns the APPM.

Indian institute offers two course in sports management for aspiring professionals
Former Indian Test star VVS Laxman launched a sports management institute in Dubai which aims to educate aspiring managers and professionals.
The International Institute of Sports Management (IISM), a venture of Eduhub Education, claims to be India’s first dedicated sports management training institution.
It opened the new campus in Dubai in collaboration with the Wisdom Educational Group that is running a group of professional colleges and training centres in the UAE and India.
The IISM Dubai Campus in Bur Dubai, located near the Burjman Metro Station, is equipped with state-of-the-art sports learning facilities in a 500 square metre facility.
It will be offering two sports management courses.
“Sports is becoming big but there is a huge gap in providing training facility for training professional sports managers. The UAE has spent nearly Dh42 million only to train athletes out of the UAE, but there is a huge shortage of trained sports managers. Experts come from other countries like Australia and Europe at a high consultancy fees. Many young students who are keen to pursue a career in sports management can join the courses offered by IISM in Dubai and its campus in Bombay. By next month we are planning to open a second campus in New Delhi,” said Shall Kapri, Dean of IISM.
Students will undergo training in sports marketing, sports finance, rules and regulations, ethics in sports, sport facility management, sports event staging and sponsorships, sports marketing research, sports journalism and leagues and team management.
Nilesh Kulkarni, an Indian cricketer, the founder and director of Eduhub Education, was present among other sports personalities at the launch on Tuesday.
The IISM Advisory Board includes sports personalities like Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi, Development Officer of BCCI, Professor Ratnakar Shetty, and former Indian captain and commentator Ravi Shastri, among others.
Out of the two certificate courses initially offered by the Dubai Campus of IISM, the first one is a Certificate in Sports Management (CSM) to students who have completed Class XII and is spread over a period of five months, said Ahmed Rafi, Chief Executive Officer, Wisdom Education Group.
He said the second course offers short term executive certificate in sports management for working professionals over course of three to five days.
“We have collaborated with Eduhub to provide sports educational opportunities in the UAE where sports are witnessing phenomenal growth,” he added.
With major sports events like the FIFA World Cup happening in the GCC region (Qatar), there are many career openings in the sports field, he added.
