Kuchipudi, where almost each house has a classical dancer spreading the Indian classical dance across the globe, is yet to be developed as a major rural tourist spot in Andhra Pradesh.

During the 1977 cyclonic storm, the village has lost valuable literature about the evolution of the art and historical documents and archives related to the dance.

“In the village, only senior dance teachers alive are our source of information on the greatness of Kuchipudi in the absence of availability of literature in any form with us”, Akhila Bharata Kuchipudi Natya Kalamandali Founder Secretary P. Kesava Prasad told The Hindu.

Several proposals made to the Tourism department to turn the village into a tourist spot have fallen on deaf ears. The Kuchipudi Library cum Dance School, where a majority of the Kuchipudi dance teachers in India were trained by renowned maestros, is now in a dilapidated state. In 1935, Challapalli Raja Sivaram Prasad funded the library building that has been later turned into dance school by Vedantam Parvateesam Sarma in 1957.

The library portion of the building is now being protected with bamboo mats.

Speaking to The Hindu, some senior artistes said that Kuchipudi village deserves to be announced as a heritage village and must be adopted by the government of Andhra Pradesh to promote the Indian classical dance form.

Disappointment

“Enthusiastic visitors and scholars eager to have a glimpse of the dance form will return with a great disappointment as it looks like having no cultural history at all,” Mr. Prasad added.

In Kuchipudi, not even a tourist guide was deployed by the government authorities to help visitors and show places like houses of the maestros, Vedantam Raghavayya, Vempati China Satyam and so on.

Proposal of beautification of the four-acre village pond adjacent to Sri Ramalingeswara Swami temple has been languishing in a state of neglect for long.

The evening was cloudy, cold with patchy drizzle. But a sprawling auditorium in Haailand, the theme park at Chinakakani near Vijayawada, exuded warmth as a bevy of beauties walked the ramp amidst incessant applause.

The young brigade scorching the ramp were final year students of city-based Samana Institute for Design Studies (SIDS) showcasing their works at ‘Project Runway.’ The venue boomed and rocked with high energy as the rookie models sashayed across with remarkable élan. The blaring music invited those in the vicinity to melt in the flow of jubilation that enveloped the place.

The collection, showcased by the participants and designed by in-house SIDS designers, ranged from classy to chic. It reflected myriad moods and the varied applications and understanding of fashion. Using net, lace, crepe, silhouettes, asymmetrical and clean cuts combined with drapery in layers of laces, the designers created a mystical impact. Use of raw silk, chiffon and karbon silk besides fur satin shimmer nets, crepes and bell shaped silhouettes with head gears and stylized accessories lent the participants a distinctive style.

Visakhapatnam:

Sandy Robson of Australia is no ordinary adventurer. She is 47 and is on her way to creating a kayaking world record by taking up the tough challenge of kayaking her way from Germany to Australia.

Robson is retracing a historic journey which Osker Speck of Germany undertook in 1932 and finished in seven years. She plans to finish the same in five years and is currently on stage three of her journey, paddling through the East Coast. She reached Vizag on Tuesday. Her journey along the Indian East Coast has not been as pleasant as it was through Europe or the West Coast of India.

While Robson was paddling along AP coast near Nellore, fishermen attacked her mistaking her to be a terrorist. They ran over her kayak with their boat, broke it and looted her stuff. Battling odds and standing true to sportsman spirit, she faced the attacks and with the help of AP police, she continued her journey.

She now gets police protection wherever she lands in AP. Robson said, “I was attacked many times along the AP coast, which left me feeling scared. But I understand that the fishermen were just skeptical and they panicked. Later, we spoke and I left on good terms.”

Robson’s spirit is unbroken by such incidents and she is all praise for India. She said, “This journey gave me an opportunity to see India through a different lens. People here are warm and welcoming everywhere, even in AP. I felt safe wherever I landed. Before I started my journey, people told me waters in India would be dirty and filthy which was not at all true as I paddled across some of the most beautiful stretches of blue waters in India.”

While paddling across Sri Lanka, the 47-year-old had to kayak her way once continuously for 22 hours, covering 109 km. Robson paddles an average of 45 km a day and lodges on shore about once a week to collect ration, food and drinking water.

Let the camera speak

Debut cinematographer Venkat C. Dilip feels honing his skills in the US helped him take a new look at cinema

Venkat C. Dilip submitted his thesis as part of his course in cinematography only to be told by the professor that his work was overshadowing the film instead of seamlessly blending with it. Venkat made the necessary changes and re-submitted his thesis. He remembered this lesson when he stepped out of film school to work as a camera assistant for Hollywood projects like Savannah andCrackerjack and short films such as Passing Through Traveling Down and The Visions of Dylan Bradley. “I observed that the work of many cinematographers tends to dominate a project and didn’t want to do that,” he says.

Now, Venkat’s cinematography in Oohalu Gusagusalade is being lauded for befitting the narrative and not trying to rise above what’s being demanded by the script. This is his first Telugu film and Venkat feels he has come full circle. “I was born in Guntur and did mechanical engineering from Chennai, before moving to the US,” he says.

Like many youngsters aspiring to learn the basics of filmmaking, Venkat too decided to train to be a director. But rather than taking up courses for script writing and direction, he was drawn to cinematography. “The course also taught me editing, which is essential to be a filmmaker,” he says.

Venkat C Dilip
Venkat C Dilip

During the three-year masters programme at Savannah College of Arts and Design, he got to intern on the sets of Robert Redford’s The Conspirator. “I was the only Asian on the sets. From Guntur to training with Robert Redford’s unit, it was a big shift. My father had egged me on to go to the US. I am so glad he did; my learning and work experience there changed my thought process. I learnt to look at a film differently,” he says. Venkat’s parents are film buffs and academicians now working in Swaziland.

A common friend, Bala Rajasekhar, sent Venkat’s work to Srinivas Avasarala and he got to work onOohalu Gusagusalade. “Looking back, I feel grateful for the faith Srinivas Avasarala and producer Sai Korrapati had in a debutant like me,” he says. Shooting a film with limited budget had its challenges. “Coming from a film school, I love challenges. The prospect of having to work around limitations triggers creativity,” he adds.

The portions between Rashi Khanna and Naga Shourya in Vizag have drawn attention. “The Vizag locales were refreshing. I wanted this portion of the film to look beautiful, yet not artificial,” he says. Appreciation had been coming in from his ilk as well. “Senthil Kumar appreciated the beach song for its colours and texture and P.G Vinda liked the night photography. That was a bit tricky; we had limited lights and had to make the scenes appear natural,” says Venkat.

Oohalu has opened new doors in the Telugu film industry but Venkat is looking forward to return to the US. “I want to work on both international projects and Telugu films. It will be tough, but I hope I will be able to work in both countries,” he signs off.

Youth emerges successful in pauper trial

Rahul Mahajan
Rahul Mahajan

They set out with empty pockets but returned richer. City boy Rajul Mahajan and his two friends Abhimanyu Rao and Manobal were eager to determine if having money and being rich are two different things. The trio is convinced that it is not money alone that makes one rich.

The three boys, who are pursuing a degree in Economics in Hans Raj College in New Delhi, headed to Agra where they visited the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan’s ‘monument of love’ Taj Mahal, and managed to return to their hostel, without carrying a single paisa or even their mobile phones.

Rahul is a product of Siddhartha Public School in the city. “We did not even carry our student ID cards and managed to travel back and forth thanks to a few good-natured people who helped us. Our only transgression was a lie that we had been robbed of our money by pick-pockets. We were given help by strangers because people respond differently to the beggars and those who genuinely need help,” says Rahul.

With a sound financial background, it was a new experience for him to sleep in the open and make do with a small cup of tea and a few biscuits for a meal. “The most difficult part was convincing the caretakers of Sulabh public toilets. The first time, we were shooed off the place but we managed to convince them in the second attempt,” he recalls with a smile.

More than anything else, the trip has infused a confidence in the boys to face unfamiliar situations and people. “The fear of being surrounded by strangers in an unknown terrain is no more,” he declares, informing that help came from the most unexpected quarter. “A Good Samaritan working in the parking lot of Taj Mahal was of great help. He wanted us also to help others without expecting anything in return,” he fondly reminisces.
