Visakhapatnam  :

The young woman boxers in the city, especially those from poor families, are drawing inspiration from PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar, the Olympic medallists who made India proud at Rio, and are working hard to get a foothold in the tough sport. Some of them have already proved themselves at the national and international tournaments and bagged medals. Now, they are gearing up to represent India in the next Olympics.

Boxing for these girls is not just a ticket to better life but also their passion. 20-year-old S Marthamma, who is practising boxing for the past five years was not interested in the sport initially. She has taken a liking for it after looking at the male boxers in the ring. She wore the gloves in 2010 at a summer coaching camp and after participating in the World Championships in 2011 and 2013, she bagged a silver in 64 kg category in the international tournament 2014 and did not look back since then.  Marathamma was the only woman boxer from the city, who participated in the senior pre-Olympic National camp.

Though not selected for the Olympics this time, she didn’t lose hopes and is working harder.”The women who compete at the Olympics make their cities and state famous for the sport. One day, I will make Vizag proud. I want to this city to be known for women boxers,” Marathamma said, brimming with hope.

“I don’t have enough money to get branded shoes and other kits. But, I have the guts and courage. I was disappointed for not being selected in the pre-olympic national camp. But, the girls’ show at Rio gave me a new hope,” she added. Marathamma lost her father during her childhood is now studying degree first year and aims at making her mother, a vegetable vendor, proud.

For 16-year-old G Ramya, another budding pugilist from the city, becoming a boxing champion is the dearest dream. She has been learning boxing for the past three years and has recently won a silver medal at the fifth Nations Cup 2016 held at Serbia. “It was my father’s dream to see me as a boxer. I have seen my uncle returning home with blood marks on his shirt after tough matches and yet I never lost love for this sport,” she said. “Since childhood, we are taught to be tough enough to face any situation. Once, I enter the ring, I have one thing in my mind: To prove myself,” says 17-year-old B Likitha, an intermediate student and a budding boxer who shifted to Vizag a couple of years ago for her training.

15-year-old boxer from the city, G Niharika said: “I am nothing without boxing. It is my identity. And from the proud moments we had at Rio, I am convinced that success is not far away.” A silver medallist in the World Championship 2014 in 60 kg category and gold medallist at Pykka National Boxing Championship held in 2013 under 60 kg category, Niharika is leaving no stone unturned in her preparations for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

From barren fields to hallowed turf

RajaniANDHRA27jul2016

When she chose to wield the hockey stick more than a decade ago, her parents reposed confidence in E. Rajani. Now, they are eager to see her strike gold at Rio as the goalkeeper of the Indian women’s hockey team.

Even after their daughter started making a career in hockey, it’s life as usual for carpenter E. Ramanachari and his wife Tulasi, who grazes cows, in Yanamalavaripalle village of Chittoor district. Ramanachari’s education ended in class five and Tulasi never went to school, but that did not deter them from envisaging a career in sport for their child.

Rajani herself hadn’t any sporting aspirations in primary school, but things changed when she joined class eight at Zilla Parishat High School in Nerabailu.

The tall girl was initially picked for volleyball, but physical education trainer D. Venkat Raju found her agility and endurance suitable for hockey.

He got barren paddy fields levelled. Rajani and her friends walked along the field-bunds for 3km to practice. In fact, this nondescript school has sent 14 students to many national sporting events. And now, Rajani has raised the bar, scaling international heights.

Identifying her potential, Andhra Hockey Association secretary A.P.K. Reddy brought her out of the village to the Hockey Academy sub-centre here and later to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Hyderabad, exposing her to international events in New Zealand, Japan, China, Korea, Argentina, Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia. She also bagged the ‘Best Goalkeeper Award’ at an event in Japan in 2013.

“She last visited us ten months ago and we hope to see her back soon with a gold medal,” says her mother, brimming with confidence.

Biking for me is a symbol of empowerment and liberty, says Vaishali More

With the wind slicing through her hair, riding across the three states of AP, Telangana, and Maharashtra and a passion to conquer the roads, 48-year-old Vaishali More is all set to embark on her first solo motorcycle ride from Visakhapatnam to Shirdi on Wednesday morning.

Purpose

Terming it as a “dream ride where the journey is the destination”, the woman biker from the Port City spoke to The Hindu about the purpose behind the ride and what biking means to her ahead of her journey.

“Biking for me is a symbol of empowerment and liberty and this journey marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I have always wanted to ride solo and this will be the first experience for me,” said the passionate biker, who started her biking adventures when she was in college.

Her ride is being supported by city based organisation Rohit Memorial Trust. Vaishali will cover the distance of around 1,700 km in five days, making pit stops at Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Solapur and Pune before ending her journey in Shirdi.

Armed with safety gears, a helmet clasped over her hair, sporting a riding jacket that will guard her back, shoulder and elbow and skid proof boots, she will make her first stop at Vijayawada on Wednesday night.

During her journey, she will be meeting organisations such as Rotary Clubs and biking groups to share her experiences and discuss various social issues concerning women.

Prelude

“This journey is a prelude to the cross country solo bike ride that I am planning next year in association with Rohit Memorial Trust as part of a project on women empowerment under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The aim is to cover eight to 10 smart cities and reach out to women to spread awareness on a series of issues like domestic violence and menstrual hygiene,” said Vaishali.

In Hyderabad, the biker will be meeting members of Wanderers, a biking community and woman biker Sana Iqbal.

At Pune, three women bikers from the local chapter of the Bikerni group will accompany her till Shirdi in their quest to overturn widely held stereotypes such as riding being a gendered hobby.

“Biking for me is meditative. My bike is like an extension of my personality. I know every pulse of it,” says Vaishali while describing her association with her 220 CC Bajaj Avenger Cruise bike that she fondly calls as ‘Ellie’ – a short form of the French word Esprit Libre meaning free spirit.

She will make pit stops at Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Solapur and Pune before ending her journey in Shirdi.

Rana Uppalapati is all set to embark on a remarkable journey on skates once again covering 800 kilometres from Visakhapatnam to Chennai for a social cause.

Rana’s journey that will begin on Saturday will cover the coastal corridor in eight days and culminate at Chennai’s Marina Beach as part of an awareness campaign for breast cancer for the Chennai Pinkathon to be held on June 5.

He plans to skate 100 km each day and speak at colleges and villages along the way about his journey and the cause behind it.

Rana had previously skated from Mumbai to Goa for the Goa edition of Pinkathon.

Founded by actor and model Milind Soman, Pinkathon is an event that aims to inspire women to get fit and change their outlook towards health, apart from spreading awareness about important health issues.

Rana’s incredible feat on skates is also an effort to raise funds for a cancer patient admitted at Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, who has been diagnosed with stage two of cancer.

Addressing a media conference on Friday, Rana, the young entrepreneur and business associate of Titan Industries Ltd., said: “There are many patients who cannot afford cancer treatment. We have identified one such patient who is differently-abled and below the poverty line. I urge people to at least donate Re 1 for each kilometre I skate towards her treatment through the crowd funding website Ketto (www.ketto.org/800) to contribute to the cause.” For offline contributions, contact Jyothi at 9000831655.

Harsh summer conditions

“It is not easy to skate on such harsh summer conditions and I have been warned enough. But I hope through my journey I am able to reach out to more people and spread awareness on critical health issues. Pinkathon ambassadors, Sirisha and Jyothi will be helping me in keeping this campaign going,” added Rana.

Community engagement activities

On his recent journey on skates from Mumbai to Goa, Rana had undertaken community engagement activities by motivating youth and giving talks at schools and colleges along the way. He had penned down his experiences on his Facebook posts that had become quite popular.

The Vizag edition of Pinkathon – Vizag Going Pink – will be held on November 20 this year.

In a rare show of unity in sporting circles, Andhra Carrom Association and Hyderabad Carrom Association join hands to ensure unanimous election for all posts

He was not born when the All-India Carrom Federation was formed back in 1956. But, 47-year-old Dr. Neeraj Sampathy has achieved the rare distinction of becoming the first-ever Telugu speaking official to head the national sports body, on Sunday.

Nothing could have been more symbolic than one of the founder-members of the AICF, 75-year-old omnipresent B.K. Haranath, ensuring that there are no more hiccups in handing over the baton to Dr. Sampathy, who himself is a passionate carom player besides being an enterprising president of Andhra Carrom Association.

Ironically, despite his vast experience and major contribution to promoting the sport, Mr. Haranath has never headed the AICF. In the new setup too, he was given the post of director (media), as he is known to be adept in handling the media.

And, in a rare show of unity in sporting circles, both Andhra Carrom Association and the Hyderabad Carrom Association joined hands as part of the process to ensure the unanimous election for all the posts at the AGM here. Consequently, S. Madan Raj, secretary of Hyderabad Carrom Association, will be the treasurer.

The new AICF chief says that every effort would be made to see that carrom, which is in Group C in terms of sports discipline priority list – both at the State and the Central-level, gains a place in Group A.

“The only way out is to popularise the sport hosting more events – national and international – to produce more champions,” Dr. Sampathy remarked. “With the School Games Federation of India already including carrom in its curriculum, we will try our best to see that it is introduced at the university level too,” he said.

We will try our best to introduce carom at the university level. Dr. Neeraj Sampathypresident, AICF
