New Haven:

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza notched up her third title of the season and 17th overall as she lifted the women’s doubles trophy at the WTA New Haven Open along with new partner Jie Zheng here.

Playing just their fourth event together, third seeds Sania and Jie pipped the second-seeded pair of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Katarina Srebotnik 6-3 6-4 in the summit clash.

Mirza and Zheng fell behind an early break but quickly got back and from 3-3 in the first set, they won six of the next seven games to capture the first set and take control of the second.

They did have a bit of trouble closing it out, as at 5-2 in the second set, Medina and Srebotnik won two games in a row and then got to deuce on Mirza’s serve before the Indo-Chinese duo finished off the triumph on their fifth match point.

“We didn’t start the tournament too well, winning a couple of what you might call ugly matches,” Mirza said. “But we kept getting better with each match. It was great to play our best match in the final.

“It’s tough with this format. It’s relentless. There’s really no margin of error with the deuce points, the super tie-break. It’s just a toss-up sometimes. Even today’s match was 63 64, but it was much tighter with the deuce points. The last set we won three deuce games.”

It was Sania’s fourth final of the year and 25th overall.

Sania, the only Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title, had won two titles this season before this triumph. Both the previous titles came with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

A blessing in disguise

Visakhapatnam:

It might not win the race for the capital of Seemandhra following the state’s bifurcation but Vizag is set to emerge as the sports capital of the proposed state (Seemandhra), according to sports experts here in this rather bustling coastal city.

Well, that’s not a mere hunch of the sports enthusiasts. Their opinion has a basis because Vizag is already fast emerging as a sports hub. It won’t take the coastal city much time in transforming into a full-fledged sports capital of Seemandhra once the separate state comes into being, sports experts opined.

That doesn’t seem a misplaced opinion what with coastal city already boasting a series of sporting structure. They are the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA nternational cricket stadium, Swarnabharati Indoor Stadium besides a number of clay and synthetic tennis courts.

And the list doesn’t complete without the city’s crowning glory: The picturesque East Point golf course.

This booming sporting infrastructure is sure to mushroom following the formation of a separate state of Seemandhra. And with that will multiply the opportunities for the city’s budding sports persons, according to the observers of the city’s sporting scene.

Traditionally, the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh had more players from Hyderabad excelling in national and International arenas than Vizag. Following bifurcation, the situation may just alter. The coastal city may attain that prima Donna status, according to sports lovers.

“Vizag stands a very good chance of becoming the sports capital of Seemandhra despite it being located at the corner of the new state”, said Subba Rao, President of Andhra Cricket Association. “The city is equipped to host international events easily as it has international air connectivity besides boasting some international level stadiums and several star hotels”, he added.

Vizag emerging as a sports capital would mean more budding sportspersons from Seemandhra getting a chance to flower and representing their region in national and international events, Rao said.

Sports fraternity of the region feels that Vizag being a coastal town and blessed with good beaches can also host international waters sports evens like surfing, rowing, kayaking and sailing. “We also need some more world class sporting infrastructure so as to be able to host national and international events of football, basketball, archery and athletics”, said President of Andhra Pradesh Volleyball Association S Kodandaramiah.

According to Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh officials, once a separate state of Seemandhra is created, a separate Sports Authority of India and Sate Olympic Association would have to be formed.

Hyderabad Marathon: Best pacing strategy to adopt

HyderabadMarathonHF12aug2013

Q. I have a time goal for the Hyderabad Marathon *. Any advice on the best pacing strategy to adopt?

Good question. Unlike shorter races – 10K and even the half marathon  – where you can predict your finish time to within a minute or two, the full marathon has too much uncertainty that makes forecasting difficult. Hence, it is important to approach your race with a pacing strategy but make adjustments depending on the weather, course topography and the tactics of other runners (relevant for those intent on placement).

Set a  goal time based on facts and not picked from thin air, or simply X minutes faster  than your previous race. This only sets you up for disappointment if you don’t achieve your timing whereas the truth may be that you ran very well but had an unrealistic timing goal.

Broadly there are three pacing strategies that an amateur runner could adopt in a race:

(a) Start hard and hold on for your dear life
Usually makes for a painful race experience as lactate quickly accumulates and we are forced to slow down. Also results in fast glycogen burn. Now you understand why so many runners lose their way soon into a race.

(b) Start conservatively and pick up pace later
It takes experience to know when to pick up the pace and often you finish with “gas in your tank” knowing you could have done better. A safe approach but dicey when you have a target goal time.

(c) Maintain an even pacing throughout
Takes focus and confidence to hold back when feeling strong in the early stages but proven to pay off. And, if you have proper running form, trained correctly, come rested into the race and then follow a proven fueling plan  you may even manage a negative split!

BostonMarathonHF12aug2013

I look at my splits for the Boston Marathon 2013 :

Ashok Nath (50+): Boston Marathon’13
PER KM SPLIT
5K: 0:20:45 4.09
10K: 0:41:26 4.08
15K: 1:02:20 4.11
20K: 1:23:28 4.13
Half: 1:28:02 4.09
25K: 1:44:43 4.15
30K: 2:06:29 Hills start 4.21
35K: 2:28:20 Hills continue 4.22
40K: 2:49:49 4.18
FINISH: 2:59:33 Average pace 4.15

If you factor in that the Boston hills come between the 25K to 35K stretch when my pace fell to 4.20/km then the actual picture is very steady. In fact, I usually do faster timings at the 5K, 10K, 20K and 30K mark but feel the pain thereafter whereas this time, at Boston, with a more steady pace I had the strength to finish strong.
Finally, remember that each runner is unique and so hold on to your game plan and not get distracted by other runners.

* Airtel Hyderabad Marathon  will take place on 25th August, 2013.

Tulasi Chaitanya joined the A.P. Police as a constable only a year ago, but he has now become the toast of the entire sports fraternity by creating history of sorts: becoming the first-ever swimmer from the State to win an international medal.

As a member of the Indian team, Chaitanya bagged the 4 x 50m freestyle relay gold in the World Police Games held in Belfast.

Significantly, Chaitanya, stationed in Vijayawada, will feature in five more individual events and is expected to surprise many with a couple of stand-out performances, says Rajiv Trivedi, Additional DGP (Sports).

Thanks to the initiative of the A.P. Police top brass, Chaitanya had a training stint at the famous Basavanagudi Swimming Pool in Bangalore under the tutelage of head coach Pradeep Kumar.

This is the same national coach who saw many teenagers from Karnataka win gold in the recent Junior National Aquatics at Gachibowli.

Chaitanya’s performance was no surprise to many who followed his career-graph, as only recently he won two gold and a silver in the All India Police Games held in Guwahati, following which V. Dinesh Reddy, Director-General of Police, gave him an out-of-turn promotion as head constable.

Incidentally, Chaitanya is also the first swimmer to be picked from the State for the World Police Games. He also holds the world record timing of 12 hours and 31 minutes for crossing Palk Strait (30-km distance between Sri Lanka and India).

“We are grateful to the government for supporting sportspersons like Tulasi with special grants. We are also trying out similar options in other disciplines where there is a potential to win medals at the highest level. Our goal is to see that one from our department wins a medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio,” he says.

It’s her racket that does the talking

Hearing and speech impairment has done little to dilute Shaik Jafreen’s passion for tennis and the 15-year-old from Kurnool is set to represent India in the Sofia Deaflympics to be held in Bulgaria from July 26

In an era when innovations on the communications front are shrinking the world, she has a major handicap – cannot speak and comprehend properly what the others say. But, the indefatigable Shaik Jafreen is now keen to let her tennis racket do the talking with her selection to represent India in the Sofia Deaflympics to be held in Bulgaria from July 26.

“This is great news to me. I am really determined to prove a point or two,” gestures the 15-year-old hearing and speech-impaired tennis player from Kurnool. Her father S. Zakeer Ahmed is an advocate. For someone whose dreams of taking part in the 2012 London Paralympics were dashed because of the poor handling of entries for the event, Jafreen strongly believes that the Sofia edition can well be the turning point of her career.

“I badly need a big win and if I get that there, it should do a world of good to me,” she conveys her desire .

She underwent a one-month intensive training session under Anirudh at the KSLTA in Bangalore and also bagged a gold medal in the 2012 Punjab National championship in the hearing and speech-impaired category. Yet, it has been a real struggle for this girl from a relatively small town to be in the competitive circuit as she has little support outside her own family.

Her father even disposed of his plot to let Jafreen pursue her passion for the sport with costs often coming to about Rs. 3 lakh per annum. “She was so dejected when I once threw up my hands that she refused to touch food. I then decided to support her at any cost,” says the father. Jafreen, an Intermediate first year student in KRM Government Junior College, will be joining the national camp in Delhi from July 10.
