Tirupati:

A seven-year-old skater is trying to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

Gundupalli Devisri Prasad, started skating at the local Srinivasa sports complex in Tirupati at the age of six. He is planning to enter the record books in Limbo skating.

Even though Devisri Prasad is confident of turning his dream into reality, he is on the lookout for sponsors to turn his dream into reality.

He has already won many sporting laurels on the global arena over the years.

The grim reality in terms of available resources including financial issues has come as the biggest hurdle for this 7-yr old skater who hails from a lower middle class family.

Devi’s father G.Lokanatham, a retired Junior technical officer in the Panchayat raj department and mother G.Padma, a housewife have been a pillar of support for Devi ever since he stepped into the skating rink.

‘My father is my biggest strength. He attends every single practice session of mine which goes on for 4 hours a day on a road between Sri Venkateswara university and Sri Venkateswara Vedic university without fail and instills confidence in me whenever i’m down’.

His father Lokanatham says ‘Devi is a god’s gift to us. He was born after close to three decades of our marriage and ever since he stepped into skating we have backed him despite our financial difficulties to ensure no hurdle comes between him and his dream of becoming the world’s best skater’.

Devi’s mother and foster mother G. Meena Prabha too chip in with the needed help when it comes to maintaining a good diet and other personal issues. Meanwhile the management of the ‘Silver Bells Central school’ where Devi is studying grade III have been very accommodating when it comes to re-scheduling special classes for him which he misses on account of his sporting engagements.

‘Devi is the best among the boys in his age group in the country, but he needs more training to win accolades for the nation in the international sporting events, which comes at a price’, says Devi’s trainer Mr.Prasad.

The young skater who is all set to go the distance to get a place in the Guinness book of world records is on the look out for sponsors to get closer to his dreams.

Bhavani Island keeps them waiting

BhavaniIslandAP11jun2014

Fun lovers yet to get the green signal to indulge in adventure sports on the island. A number of adventure games were introduced in the island to add to the fun element for the younger lot.

Fun-loving children, who can’t wait to chill out in the series of exotic and adventure games introduced on Bhavani Island on the river Krishna, eagerly look forward to the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister-designate N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Yes, there is a connection between the two. Children who throng the picturesque island with the fond hope of freaking out in the adventure zone that promises loads of fun, especially after installation of a number of fun games like ‘Jungle Gym’, wall-climbing and most importantly, the water-roller that allows fun-lovers to walk, float and roll on water in a 12-feet-long cylindrical PVC structure, are crest-fallen when they are asked to wait for some more days.

A number of adventure games were introduced in the island to add to the fun element for the younger lot. But elections, followed by the bifurcation, marred the smooth sail. The local AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) authorities are now waiting for the green signal from the government (which does not exist) to bring the new equipment into use.

“The fun-starved kids in this region have never had their share of entertainment. The island somehow has never delivered the promised fun and frolic. It has always disappointed visitors in some way or the other. It took years for the APTDC authorities to wake up to the tourism potential of this place and bring in games that could attract large crowds. When it was done finally, the elections and bifurcation played spoilsport,” rues Soumya, a young mother. “Driven by the exciting idea of riding a water-roller sporting a life jacket, I visited the island only to be told that the new sports have not yet been made operational,” says a disappointed Chanakya.

Besides taking up repairs to the damaged play equipment like Burma Bridge and other adventure sports, completion of the long-awaited amphitheatre and renovation of the restaurant and tree-top cottages, the Tourism Corporation authorities have introduced high rope activities, a climbing wall, a Tarzan swing and much more. Funds to the tune of Rs. 1 crore have been spent to spruce up the island but it will take some time before young fun-lovers can actually reap the benefits.

TENNIS / INTERVIEW : ‘A great feeling to win a WTA title’

“It has been a good year so far, having entered a couple of finals including the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open. More importantly, I am ranked World No. 3 in doubles. I am trying to do as well as possible,” says Sania Mirza. By V. V. Subrahmanyam.

Sania Mirza…“I still think I have a realistic chance of being World No. 1 in doubles. I am very close to that right now. Before I stop playing, I think I can achieve this.”

Sania Mirza is upbeat after winning the women’s doubles title at the WTA Portugal Open recently. The 27-year-old player from Hyderabad and her partner, the 10-time Grand Slam winner Cara Black of Zimbabwe, defeated Eva Hrdinova (Czech Republic) and Valeria Solovyeva (Russia) 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

“Well, it is always a great feeling to win a WTA title. And this is in a way special, for it is my 20th title overall in the circuit,” says a visibly elated Sania.

For the record, Sania and Cara were playing their third final of the season, having finished runner-up at Indian Wells and Stuttgart earlier. The duo has won three titles from five finals.

“It has been a good year so far, having entered a couple of finals including the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open. More importantly, I am ranked World No. 3 in doubles. I am trying to do as well as possible,” says Sania in a chat with Sportstar.

“Cara Black will be my partner. It was a bit unfortunate that in Sydney early this year, she had a niggling injury. But she is fit now and so am I. Wish to come up with real good performances.

“When I look back, it’s good that Cara Black and I lost early in the Australian Open. It gave time for her to recover,” she says.

“We will be playing in the French Open together,” Sania adds.

Talking of her future in doubles, she says: “Definitely, you have to keep changing your goals as the days pass by. I still think I have a realistic chance of being World No. 1 in doubles. I am very close to that right now. Before I stop playing, I think I can achieve this.” On the changes in the game ever since she won her first WTA singles title in 2005, the winner of two majors says: “It is really huge — the standard of the game in the last six to seven years. It is more of physical strength now. Longer rallies are the order of the day. Need to be able to sustain your fitness levels. I don’t think tennis has ever been so demanding physically as it has been of late.”

Answering a query on her fitness, Sania says: “I feel pretty good in terms of physical fitness. Some odd niggles will be there, but nothing major.”

She goes on: “I can’t say how my career will be after a few more years. I want to take it year by year. As you all know, there was a phase when I thought it was all over because of the wrist injuries in 2010 and the number of surgeries I had to undergo.

“But I came back well to enter a Grand Slam final and win a Grand Slam title too later on. Results which made me believe that it was not all over.”

Sania is perturbed over some media reports suggesting that all is not well with her marriage with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.

“Life is hectic and very demanding for both of us since we are professional sportspersons. This, we were pretty well aware of before we got married. Definitely, this is not the way you like it to be — being away from each other. But there are very few options when our focus is on our respective sporting careers,” explains Sania.

“Definitely, there are times when we do feel why we should go through these testing times. But we are aware of the goals ahead since we believe that there is a lot left in us to be in sport.

“Ours is a special relationship and let me tell you we never discuss the media reports on our marriage.

“Let me remind you, we did not get married for the sake of fans. Our relationship continues to be special. Definitely, it hurts when the media intrudes our privacy. But again, we can’t go around and keep answering every one around,” she adds.

Back at Play school

VVS Laxman with his wife Sailaja and children at the launch of 1st Innings | a suresh kumar

Apart from quality education, the surroundings and ambience that a child learns in, plays a huge part in their schooling experience. Keeping that in mind, 1st Innings playschool was launched in the city on Friday by Sailaja Laxman and her husband VVS Laxman, the cricketer. As chairperson and founder of the organisation respectively, the duo inaugurated the premises that is located at Road No.2  Banjara Hills which are in fact, the brain child of Sailaja.

“What you give your children is the most significant part of your life. Good values and education are instrumental to a child’s life and an educated person is able to learn and adapt better,” explained Sailaja about the driving motto behind her idea, before thanking her ‘very very special husband’, much to his amusement.

Admitting that it was challenging to be a cricketer’s wife, given the amount of travelling involved, she said she used the opportunity to visit some of the finest schools in the world. “Thanks to my husband’s profession, I had the  opportunity to visit some of the best schools in the world and I know what international quality of education is like. I wish to bring that similar model of world class infrastructure and teaching to Hyderabad through 1st Innings,” she emphasised.

Quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s famous line ‘Don’t limit a child to your own learning, as he was born in another time’, she said she developed her passion for education while bringing up her own two kids. “When my children were ready for school, I  wanted to provide the best possible education for them and did a lot of research on the best schools available. I then decided to put in my strong passion towards education to use by starting this project,” she explained.

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman played the double role of a husband and a father and had his hands full with his two children by his side. Humble as ever, Laxman was his usual warm self and was delighted to be part of this project. “This venture is very important to me. A lot of people had asked what I would like to do when I retire and I said that apart from helping with cricket in Hyderabad, I would also like to open a school. So I’m happy to be a part of this project and I am convinced it will be a success,” he said.

Off field

Currently playing the role of a mentor to the Hyderabad Sunrisers (SRH) in the Indian Premier League, Laxman was happy with the team’s UAE outing, despite losing three out of five games. “I thought we played some good cricket and the pitches were really good. Even though we lost three games, two of them were really close and on another day, we could’ve won them. Hoping for a good show back in India now,” he said.

SRH’s lethal spin-twins Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma were instrumental in their good showing last season, but have failed to deliver the same impact this time around as they were taken to the cleaners by the opposition. Laxman is hoping that their form improves in India. “Obviously it hasn’t gone perfectly for them and we are hoping that the pitches in Hyderabad will suit them and they regain their potency which was so crucial for us last season,” he said.

SRH captain has been under the scanner for some of his decision-making, which made fans wonder if Darren Sammy was better qualified for the job. Laxman though, was quick to dismiss such views and backed Dhawan to the hilt. “No, I think Dhawan is doing a good job. There’s no concern there,” he said.

Former Indian Test star VVS Laxman launched a sports management institute in Dubai which aims to educate aspiring managers and professionals.

The International Institute of Sports Management (IISM), a venture of Eduhub Education, claims to be India’s first dedicated sports management training institution.

It opened the new campus in Dubai in collaboration with the Wisdom Educational Group that is running a group of professional colleges and training centres in the UAE and India.

The IISM Dubai Campus in Bur Dubai, located near the Burjman Metro Station, is equipped with state-of-the-art sports learning facilities in a 500 square metre facility.

It will be offering two sports management courses.

“Sports is becoming big but there is a huge gap in providing training facility for training professional sports managers. The UAE has spent nearly Dh42 million only to train athletes out of the UAE, but there is a huge shortage of trained sports managers. Experts come from other countries like Australia and Europe at a high consultancy fees. Many young students who are keen to pursue a career in sports management can join the courses offered by IISM in Dubai and its campus in Bombay. By next month we are planning to open a second campus in New Delhi,” said Shall Kapri, Dean of IISM.

Students will undergo training in sports marketing, sports finance, rules and regulations, ethics in sports, sport facility management, sports event staging and sponsorships, sports marketing research, sports journalism and leagues and team management.

Nilesh Kulkarni, an Indian cricketer, the founder and director of Eduhub Education, was present among other sports personalities at the launch on Tuesday.

The IISM Advisory Board includes sports personalities like Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi, Development Officer of BCCI, Professor Ratnakar Shetty, and former Indian captain and commentator Ravi Shastri, among others.

Out of the two certificate courses initially offered by the Dubai Campus of IISM, the first one is a Certificate in Sports Management (CSM) to students who have completed Class XII and is spread over a period of five months, said Ahmed Rafi, Chief Executive Officer, Wisdom Education Group.

He said the second course offers short term executive certificate in sports management for working professionals over course of three to five days.

“We have collaborated with Eduhub to provide sports educational opportunities in the UAE where sports are witnessing phenomenal growth,” he added.

With major sports events like the FIFA World Cup happening in the GCC region (Qatar), there are many career openings in the sports field, he added.
